Earthen dam moves up on county to-do list

Jail contract with city of Imperial on agenda

The earthen dam north of Wauneta has been on the county’s radar for over a year. Urgency to repair the dam increased after a visit from Nebraska Department of Natural Resources’ Tim Gokie at the Feb. 26 commissioners’ meeting.
Gokie, Dam Safety Section chief engineer, told Commissioners Jacci Brown, Dennis Kunnemann and Chuck Vette the dam, located on 347 Avenue just east of Old Highway 6, has numerous cracks and sinkholes. Trees on the north side of the dam have also caused concern.
State inspectors can’t be sure the cracks go clear through the dam without further inspection. Gokie said the cracks most likely occurred because of settling in the middle of the dam.
