Crowd gathers to watch national champion parli pro team

The auditorium at Chase County Schools (CCS) was nearly full Tuesday night for a public demonstration from Imperial’s national champion FFA parliamentary procedure team.
The team of Jozie Schilke, Brooklyn Christensen, Valerie Herbert, Lindsey Mendenhall, Courtney Odens and Alexis Richmond are fresh off their win at the 92nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.
A crowd of about 100 people gathered to watch a demo by the team.
Coach Jeremy Vlasin opened the program by providing a description of the contest, including all the tests the team had to pass to take the title.
Cake and ice cream was served after, with a chance for the public to ask more questions individually with the team members.
Test scores
Vlasin also shared the scores of those parli pro tests.
The average exam score of the teams at nationals was a 74%. Among the top 12 teams, the average was an 87%. The Imperial team’s average exam score was a 91%, which was the third highest.
Since each Imperial member earned an 80% or above on the written test, each became a certified parliamentarian.
“The minutes practicum was really hard this year at nationals,” Vlasin said. The average of all teams was a 52%. Top 12 teams averaged 65% and the Imperial girls averaged 68%. That score placed them third overall.
In the problem-solving round, where members were given a scenario and had to cite Robert’s Rules of Order, the overall average was 70%. Top 12 averaged 93%, but the Imperial girls averaged a 99%.
Once scores were totaled to include everything but the demos, the average of the 42 total teams was 72%. Top 12 was 87%, and Imperial averaged 91%.
Demonstration
Vlasin brought out a large notepad on an easel that showed the audience what motions were on the team’s cards.
As they performed, Vlasin crossed off those motions and tallied how often the girls debated, giving the audience a picture of what a judge looks for during a demo.
Vlasin said he did this, “So that you can see what’s going on and you’re not completely lost during this whole process,” he laughed.
