County treasurer hopefuls running on same ticket

Two women are seeking election as county treasurer, both on the Republican ticket.
Either Incumbent Cynthia Schoenberger or Penny Strand will advance out of the May 15 Primary, and voters had a chance to meet them at Monday’s town hall forum.
Asked initially what they see as primary issues of the office, Strand responded that she would create a friendly, efficient environment. She would also staff enough people in the office at times when it’s busiest.
Schoenberger said most issues she faces in her position are personal to each customer. She and her staff help them get what they need taken care of, she said.
Their only other question dealt with license plates. An issue a few years ago prevented some commercial and farm license holders from getting the same license number they’d had for years.
Schoenberger said the state renumbered all of the license plates for Chase County except passenger vehicles, and more than two-thirds of what the county had before were not generated again. She didn’t support that state decision, but felt it was fairest to start over and assign plates as they were distributed.
Strand responded, “Give the people what they want. If they want their license plates, give it to them.”
Whoever emerges as winner from the Primary will likely be the next county treasurer since there are no other filings on any other political ticket.
