Council reluctantly turns down Wellington property offer

Saying that it was a hard decision and they’d like to be able to accept the donation, Imperial city council members turned down the Wellington building offer from owner Dustin Weiss.
Weiss approached the city earlier this summer, offering to donate some of the buildings at 10th and Wellington Sts. to the city.
When initially offering the gym, attached classrooms and office to the city, Weiss said it was becoming too time-consuming to keep track of who was using the gym for a variety of activities—basketball, volleyball, birthday parties and more.
He said then it was his goal to make it available to the public.
Council members all thanked Weiss for his generosity, but the potential costs of operating the building down the road were mentioned by several.
“Because we have so much unknown right now, I don’t think we can take on another property,” said Council President Charlesa Kline.
