Council, mayor take look at proposed jail contract

While no action was taken, the Imperial mayor and city council members got a first hard look at a proposed contract with the county on housing inmates at the jail.
“I don’t believe we’re ready to sign this tonight,” Mayor Dwight Coleman said, but encouraged more work on the details.
Commissioner Jacci Brown was at Monday’s council meeting to discuss the contract.
“We want you guys to tell us what you like and don’t like in the contract, and let’s go back and forth,” she said.
“And keep in mind, we’re motivated, or should be motivated, to take the prisoners here,” Brown said.
“If we can, we shouldn’t be motivated to send them off because it’s going to cost us (the county) more money.”
She said the commissioners definitely want to negotiate on such a contract “to stay out of legal problems.”
