Commissioners hear updates from sheriff’s office, county hospital

Chase County Courthouse security, Chase County Community Hospital and the proposed veterans’ memorial all held spots on the agenda for the Jan. 23 Chase County Commissioners meeting.
New security cameras
Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller briefed commissioners Dave Hogsett, Chuck Vette and Don Weiss, Jr. on a proposed new security camera system for the courthouse.
Mueller presented an estimate of $8,279.92 for the system, which would cover all areas inside and outside of the courthouse.
A later part of the discussion with Mueller was the resignation of Deputy Mike Dukes.
In Dukes’ Letter to the Editor in last week’s Imperial Republican, he thanked “all of the citizens of Chase County for allowing me to be a part of what is Chase County.” Dukes indicated, however, that the rising cost of his family’s health care led him to seek employment elsewhere.
At the Oct. 24 commissioners’ meeting, representatives from Hayes Companies told the board that the county’s insurance situation was “not great.” The county had no new policy offers, but did have the chance to renew its current policy.
The commissioners later passed a resolution to provide Medicare-eligible employees $500 a month to make the switch to Medicare in the hopes of lowering the county’s insurance costs.
Hospital seeks guaranteed price for bond
At a special meeting Jan. 19, members of the Chase County Community Hospital Board approved asking Adolfson & Peterson Construction and Davis Partnership Architects (AP/Davis) to provide a maximum guaranteed price for the proposed new hospital.
The process will cost the hospital around $1.5 million, but will allow the hospital board to give the voting public an exact figure for the bond election in the fall.
The cost of the work for the guaranteed price will be included in the bond. If the bond passes, the cost is covered. If the bond fails the hospital is on the hook for the amount.
