Commissioners discuss future of SWA

The future of the Southwest Solid Waste Agency was a hot topic during the Oct. 22 Chase County Commissioners’ meeting.
The commissioners continued discussion from prior meetings over the future of the agency.
Commissioner Dennis Kunnemann said in his discussions with City Administrator Jo Leyland that Imperial Mayor Dwight Coleman would like to see SWA dissolved. Coleman did not respond to Kunnemann’s call and text.
Kunnemann also said the city believes Janet Sheaffer’s term as the city’s appointee has expired.
Sheaffer was at the Aug. 13 commissioners’ meeting and said the board had stopped meeting more than a year ago, but as SWA treasurer she was still signing the SWA checks presented to her by the city.
The commissioners questioned how SWA was still able to pay its bills if a board wasn’t in place to approve its expenses.
Assistant County Attorney Rory Roundtree suggested Kunnemann, as the commissioners’ representative, meet with Larry Carpenter, the county’s appointed representative, and city council representative Johna Jablonski for a discussion of how to proceed.
The city council has taken no action on the county’s proposed appointment of Rob Hartman as the joint representative.
