Chase County no longer free of coronavirus cases

Governor eases more state restrictions beginning June 1

While it’s a number some counties in Nebraska would love to have, Chase County’s first confirmed coronavirus case has caused a lot of discussion here.
Myra Stoney, director of the Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD), confirmed the first case  in Chase County over the weekend.
In a news release dated Sunday, she stated a man in his 70s is Chase County’s first case. He is hospitalized.
How the person became exposed to the virus remains under investigation, she said.
During such investigations, the patient provides the names of people they have been in contact with over a specified number of days. SWNPHD then calls those people to discuss their exposure and what they need to do, she said.
Stoney had no other information to add.
Along with Chase County’s first case, Furnas County added two additional cases the past week, bringing the health district’s total to 18.
Furnas County, which includes the towns of Cambridge and Arapahoe, leads the health district with eight cases, four of whom have recovered.
Perkins, Dundy and Hayes counties all remain free of coronavirus as of Wednesday morning. Six counties in the health district now have at least one confirmed case.
Since last Wednesday, Nebraska COVID-19 related deaths grew by 18 to a total of 150 on Tuesday.
Those came from 12,355 positive tests and 75,687 tests that were negative.
The state numbers are released by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
As of Tuesday this week, DHHS officials stated numbers will now be released each Tuesday, instead of daily, as had been the case. Pertinent information that officials deem necessary will be sent out sooner, according to their website.
