CCS music teacher Randy Hayes plans to retire; Lori Klooz hired for IT position

Three other staff members resign—two classroom teachers, Director of Technology

Staff resignations and two hirings were addressed by members of the CCS board of education Tuesday.

Among the resignations was longtime vocal music teacher Randy Hayes, who’ll complete his 36th year at CCS at the end of the 2018-19 school year and plans to retire.

Shane Gerhartz, the school’s Director of Technology who’s in this third year in the position, also resigned, according to Supt. Randy Klooz.

Other resignations accepted were from Lisa Davison and Ashton Stewart, both first year teachers at CCS.

Davison is a grade 4-6 special education teacher, while Stewart teaches grade 5-6 social studies.

As part of Tuesday’s board action, Lori Klooz, wife of the superintendent, was hired for the instructional technology (IT) position now held by Gerhartz.

Supt. Klooz said the administration felt it was preferable for the school to have a person with a teaching background in the IT position.

“We like a person in that role with a teaching background so when they work with teachers they have a better understanding of their needs,” he said.

Board members did not specifically vote on the Gerhartz resignation.

Supt. Klooz said since Gerhartz is considered a classified employee, he did not include his resignation on the agenda with the three certificated staff members who resigned.

Classified resignations and hirings are now handled administratively, he said, and he provides board members documentation of any resignations and hirings involving those employees.

He said if a board member requests to have a classified position (either a hiring or resignation) on the agenda, it will be listed.

Crown Global Consulting conducted the interviews for both the IT and assessment/K-12 curriculum director position, also hired Tuesday.

The company recommended Lori Klooz be hired for the IT job and Michelle Williams of Hays, Kansas for the assessment/curriculum position, he said.
