WP Broncos is sending four on to district wrestling meet

The Wauneta-Palisade wrestling squad took six athletes to the subdistrict D-4A meet at Maxwell Saturday and moved four on to this weekend’s district meet.
At 138 lbs., Hunter Miner lost his opening round match to 26-15 Ezekial Heaton of Hyannis. Miner rebounded with a consolation round one win, then beat 21-11 Easton Messersmith of Maxwell in the consolation semis. He went on to lose to Brenton Abbott, 23-7, of Leyton and finished in fourth place.
After losing in the heartbreak round before, WP Coach Danny Schluckebier said Miner was thrilled to keep his season alive.
“He knows what it’s like to be beat out in the heartbreak round, and I’m glad he was able to push through it and win,” Schluckebier said.
In the 152 lb. bracket, Conner Bryner rolled into the finals with two wins, but lost to 43-6 Spencer DeNaeyer of Mullen in the finals.
Cody Holmes finished third at 182 lbs. Holmes only loss on the day came to eventual champion Michael Morgan, 12-6, of Morrill.
Cole Hamilton advanced to districts at 220 lbs. despite losing to Mullen’s Tel Kvanvig (24-15) twice. Hamilton picked up one win in the six man bracket and finished fourth.
Each match had a high point, Schluckebier said.
Tennille Warembourg and Trey McCrumb both saw their seasons end with two losses. Schluckebier said he likes the effort from the pair and knows they tried their hardest.
Competition at districts will be tough, Schluckebier said.
“The boys are really going to have to push themselves and wrestle their hearts out. It’s gonna be some of the hardest competition we’ve had all year.  I have faith that our boys will do amazing though,” he said.
Miner, Bryner and Holmes will all be part of eight man brackets at Saturday’s D-4 district meet at Sutherland. Seven wrestlers are listed in Holmes’ brackets.
Schluckebier said he likes splitting the first rounds of post season into two meets.
“It gives the kids a longer time to mentally and physically prepare for their matches,” he said.
And taking four to districts feels pretty good, he said, adding he was impressed with how his team wrestled.
