WP boys fall to MV, Sutherland

Another win was not in the cards for the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team last week.
The team fell at Medicine Valley Thursday, then lost a match up with Sutherland at home Friday.
WP trailed 3-17 at the end of the first quarter against MV (12-6), but warmed up in the second quarter. Aidean Kennicutt scored six of WP’s 10 first half points. The Broncos made four of 10 free throws in the game’s first half and trailed 13-35 at halftime.
Braxton McKinney went to work in the third quarter. The senior put 13 points on the board to help WP outscore the Raiders 18-13.
McKinney, Garrett Hanna and Michael Duvel nailed three pointers in the fourth quarter of the 43-64 loss.
McKinney scored a team high 17 points.
The Broncos hosted Sutherland (6-11) the next night. WP matched up well with the C2 school.
Back-to-back three pointers by Grant Walker and McKinney gave WP a 14-10 lead. The Sailors closed the quarter with a conventional three point play.
WP fell behind by six before a three pointer by Duvel with 50 seconds left in the first half pulled the Broncos to within three points, 22-25, at halftime.
Sutherland increased its lead in the third quarter. Consecutive layups by McKinney brought WP within four points before a put back by the Sailors made the score 30-36 at the end of the third quarter.
Sutherland had its largest lead of the game, eight points, with less than three minutes left. McKinney cut into the deficit with a three pointer and a conventional three point play. With 1:16 left, WP was within two points, 41-43.
A Sailors’ layup and one free throw later left the Broncos trailing 41-46 with 22.7 seconds remaining.
McKinney made a three pointer and was fouled with 15.6 seconds left. He sank the free throw to close the gap to one point, 45-46. Sutherland missed three free throws down the stretch, but the Broncos couldn’t take advantage in the one-point loss.
McKinney scored 32 for the Broncos.

WP faced Rawlins County, Kansas in Atwood Tuesday. The Broncos will host 13-8 Maywood/Hayes Center Friday.
The regular season comes to a close next week when WP travels to 17-3 Mullen Feb. 19.
Subdistricts will begin the following week.
