WP battles at DCS, Cambridge

The Wauneta-Palisade track teams had their work cut out for them last week with invites at Dundy County-Stratton and Cambridge.
WP battled a bitterly cold wind in Benkelman Tuesday.
WP took first in both 400 meter relays. Team members were Alexa Sandman, Haylee Sandman, Halle Bardsley and Cali Cox for the girls and Grant Walker, Braxton McKinney, Jacksen Littrel and Kyle Jutten for the boys.
Grant Walker led the way for the boys’ squad with first place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The junior ran a leg on the winning 400 meter relay and finished fourth in the 400 meter dash.
McKinney was first in the high jump, sixth in the 100 meter dash and eighth in the long jump.
H. Sandman and C. Cox set PRs in the prelims of the 100 meter dash, then went on to finish second and third, respectively, in the finals.
WP placed three in the girls’ long jump. C. Cox was third, A. Sandman fifth and Peyton Vrbas eighth.
Ryleigh McCrumb placed second in the girls’ 400 meter dash, fifth in the 800 meter run and seventh in the long jump.
Jutten was second in the pole vault and third in the high jump.
The boys’ team set 10 PRs and the girls’ team set eight at DCS.
The weather was much nicer Saturday when the Broncos were at Cambridge’s Don Stine Invite, the best WP has seen this season, Broncos’ Head Coach Dawn Doetker said.
“The competition was awesome and helped pushed our team,” Doetker said.
Walker had another nice day, finishing first in the 200 meter dash, second in the 100 meter dash by 0.11 seconds and eighth in the 800 meter run.
