Ten letter winners lead WP football

Having eight seniors to lead their six-man football team is a good place to start for the Wauneta-Palisade football team.
“We have had a solid core of upperclassmen who are really growing and stepping up as vocal leaders and leading by example as well,” said WP co-Head Coach Joseph Frecks.
Out of the 21 team members, 10 are returning letter winners.
“We have a good group of players that we believe will be able to provide solid depth as the year goes on,” said Frecks.
However, many of those players lack experience either as varsity players, or in the roles that they will be filling this year, he added.
Practices have been very up beat, competitive, and physical so far, according to Frecks.
“The boys are showing a desire to work hard and do the things necessary to prepare us for a competitive season,” Frecks said.
The team is getting a good handle on what WP is doing offensively, defensively and on special teams, he added, with a large emphasis on being a more disciplined and physical football team this season.
Frecks said WP’s schedule includes four district opponents who were in the playoffs a year ago and the Broncos look to be competitive through the season.
District opponents include Paxton, Southwest, Sumner-Eddyville-Miller and Wallace.
“We are looking forward to the first game against Silver Lake. That was the only game a year ago that we had the whole team fully healthy and we fell just short of completing a second half comeback,” Frecks said.
Friday’s game against Silver Lake will kick off a 2 p.m.
