SPVA proves challenging for golfers

The weather may have cooperated, but, for many, the course didn’t at the SPVA Conference golf meet Friday at Bridgeport.
The warm, sunny day was a nice change of pace after bitter cold and wind at two of Chase County’s first three meets.
CCS Head Coach Marissa McDaniel said SPVA coaches agreed that they expected to see kids score higher than they did at the Chase County Invite April 26 at Enders because of the difficulty level of the Bridgeport course.
“All in all, I think my golfers did very well,” McDaniel said, pointing out Nick Rau and Brice Vitosh shaved a few strokes off their previous scores.
While golfers Cayden White, Markenna Terryberry and Courtney Odens saw their scores go up, McDaniel said they did well compared to some golfers from other schools who added 20 strokes compared to the CCS Invite.
Rau was Chase County’s top finisher, shooting a 101 and finishing six strokes back from the 10th place finisher while tying for 12th.
    White carded a 121 and Vitosh 125. Terryberry shot a 130 and Odens 139.
The first hole on the Bridgeport course was an unusual par three, which, McDaniel said, threw golfers for a loop.
Some holes were the same on the front and back nine, but three holes were different, according to McDaniel, adding to the challenge.
North Platte St. Pat’s took the team title by 22 strokes, with the hosts coming in second.
St. Pat’s also had the top two individuals and two more finishers in the top 10.
CCS will head back to Bridgeport May 17-18 for districts. McDaniel was thankful to get an early look at the course.
“I think now that we know what to expect from the course it’ll help us prepare,” McDaniel said.
“All of this being said, I couldn’t ask for a better team. Even when they were having a tough time on a hole on Friday or weren’t getting the scores they were hoping for, they kept a great attitude,” she added.
CCS has two more meets before districts. The team was at the St. Pat’s JV Invite Tuesday. May 11 the Longhorns will be at Sutherland.
