Runners get early look at district course in Ogallala

After two previous meets with very warm conditions, Chase County runners had a bit of a reprieve last week with temperatures only in the 80s at the Ogallala Invitational.
While it was still a warm day last Thursday, “it wasn’t terrible,” said Coach Carl Zuege.
Two of his varsity runners finished in the medals, with Jordan Jablonski placing 12th in the girls’ varsity race and Trevin Moreno, 14th, in the boys’ division.
That same Ogallala location at Crandell Creek Golf Course will serve as the C5 District Meet in a short two weeks. And, last week’s invitational brought in nearly all of the teams Chase County will face at districts.
So, Zuege felt good where his top two runners finished last week.
He said if the Class B and D runners who finished ahead of Moreno and Jablonski last week are removed, that could move them into the top 10 at districts.
“So, I’m encouraged for the district meet ahead,” he said.
Chase County team standings were on the lower end last week, but it was a “loaded” race, Zuege said.
The varsity boys’ division had 98 runners, while the girls class fielded 74 athletes.
He said all of his high school runners gave good efforts.
One highlight of the meet on the junior high side was Chase County’s Haven Hauxwell, who won the boys’ 3K race, finishing ahead of 97 other runners.
Zuege said he was running second the first half of the race, then took over after moving into first, holding that spot until the finish.
“There were a lot of good runners in that race from a lot of good cross country schools,” he said.
A week and a half break
After running at the very competitive UNK Invitational Monday, the Longhorns will have more than a week off before their next races.
Next on the schedule is the Perkins County/SPVA Conference meet in Grant on Thursday, Oct. 7, at the course north of town. Races start at 4 p.m.
Teams will be able to enter six runners for varsity scoring with the top four finishers scoring. JV runners can also compete, but won’t be scored.         Ten individual place medals will be given in each division (boys and girls) and championship SPVA plates will be awarded to championship teams.
A recap of Monday’s UNK meet will be in next week’s issue.
