Longhorn boys win subdistrict opener

The Chase County boys’ basketball team will get another shot at Hershey, after the Longhorns picked up a 58-48 win over Dundy County-Stratton Tuesday evening in the first round of subdistricts.
After the Tigers scored on their first possession, CCS went to work. A Mason Nordhausen three pointer with 3:36 in the first quarter gave the Longhorns a 10 point lead, 14-4.
The Tigers put together a run of their own. By the time the quarter finished, the CCS lead had dwindled to 16-12.
With two three pointers to start the second quarter, Chase County found some breathing room again.
The lead grew to 13 points, 27-14, with five minutes left in the half. Offensive production cooled, however, from that point on. The first half buzzer sounded with CCS leading 27-19.
The Longhorns got off to a strong start in the second half, scoring the first eight points of the third quarter. Another eight point run later in the quarter pushed the lead to 43-27, but DCS closed out the third with nine straight points to keep in striking distance heading into the game’s final eight minutes.
The Tigers cut Chase County’s advantage to four points twice in the fourth quarter, but CCS found an answer each time.
With its lead up to as many as 10 points, CCS could take its time over the final two minutes. DCS was forced to foul and the Longhorns made six free throws in the final 1:45, good enough to earn a 58-48 win.
DCS finishes its season at 17-5 with two of its losses coming to CCS.
The win advances the Longhorns into the subdistrict championship game against Hershey, a team it’s lost to twice.
The game will be played Thursday at top seeded Hershey with tip off at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Panthers beat Hitchcock County 51-42 in the other subdistrict semi-final game Tuesday.
Beat Sutherland at home
Chase County dominated Sutherland at home last Friday to end its regular season.
The Longhorns took a 6-0 lead to start the game and went on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter, highlighted by three pointers from Keenan Cole and Kade Anderson.
Anderson started off the second quarter with another three pointer to push CCS to a 17-4 lead. Cedric Maxwell added two 3s of his own before the end of the first half and capped the opening half with a buzzer beating drive.
The Longhorns hit a string of three pointers in the third quarter. Nordhausen rattled in four treys to go with long range shots by Clay Meeske and Jake German.
Brandon Mintling added a three pointer in the fourth quarter. The Longhorns led 66-31 when Bartels cleared his bench with 4:20 remaining in the game.
Emmitt Zuege continued Chase County’s hot shooting from deep with two 3s in the 79-40 win.
Maxwell led three Longhorns in double figures with 14 points. Nordhausen totaled 12 points and Anderson 11.
CCS made 14 three pointers against Sutherland.
German grabbed six rebounds. Maxwell dished out five assists.
