Wauneta-Palisade defenders Alexa Sandman (12), Kendra Bley (5) and Haylee Sandman (25) prepare for a Medicine Valley shot at subdistricts last week.

Lady Broncos move on to districts

Thanks to a ninth place standing in D2 wild card points, the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team’s season is still alive.
The point standings made all the difference after WP lost to Maywood/Hayes Center last Thursday in the finals of the D2-9 subdistrict.
The Broncos are 17-8 on the season, but four losses have come at the hands of 23-2 MHC.
Despite being down 5-12 early in the game against the Wolves, WP worked itself back into the contest. The Broncos went on a 7-2 run to end the first quarter and quickly tied the game in the second quarter on two Payton Yearous free throws. Cali Cox made a three pointer and Yearous added a basket in transition to give the Broncos a 19-16 lead with only a minute gone in the second quarter.
It was all downhill from there, however.
“It basically came down to five or six possessions in the second quarter when we just threw the ball away and they got loose for layups,” WP Head Coach Matt Cox said.
MHC quickly took advantage. WP was outscored 4-21 over the remainder of the second quarter.
The Broncos’ struggles continued in the third quarter. C. Cox made WP’s only field goal. The Broncos’ only other points came on two Chloe Stehno free throws.
Trailing by double digits heading into the fourth quarter turned the remainder of the game into a grind, Cox said, as MHC likes to keep the possessions down late in the game.
C. Cox, P. Cox, Yearous and GraCee Goings made fourth quarter baskets in the 38-55 loss.
Despite the loss, Cox said he was happy with how his Broncos played, especially with Haylee Sandman ill on the bench.
Cox said the goal was to keep MHC’s Jaycee Widener in check and not allow anyone else to score in double figures.  WP was able to do that and Cox said he was happy with how his team defended.
It was the Broncos’ struggles on the offensive end that cost WP the game, he said.
C. Cox led the Broncos with nine points. P. Cox and Alexa Sandman each scored seven.
WP advanced to face the Wolves with a first round win over Medicine Valley. Feb. 16
The first half was closely contested.
