Golf team starts season at DCS

Chase County’s young golf team finally got its feet wet April 6 at the Dundy County-Stratton Invite.
    Spring practices began March 1.
Head Coach Marissa McDaniel said it definitely feels like her team had been practicing for a while, but she thought that’s really what they need as a new team.
Golfers battled a bitter wind at DCS.
“The weather at the DCS meet was miserable. Strong winds all day made it so you were fighting to stay in bounds on several holes,” McDaniel said.
CCS was the only team that hadn’t had a meet before the invite.
McDaniel said DCS was a good meet to start with.
“It’s a nice flat course, but it has its challenges, lots of out of bounds and a few water hazards,” she said.
Brice Vitosh and Cayden White led the Longhorns with scores of 136 and 139, respectively. Also on the course were Markenna Terryberry and Courtney Odens.
McDaniel expects the Longhorns to continue to improve with practice.
“This meet definitely highlighted that we need to do some work on our short game. I think if we can improve our putting, it will shave off several strokes,” McDaniel said.
She said this was the first time most of the golfers have played a full 18 holes.
“So I think we’re thankful for the long break between meets to recover and make a plan for next time,” McDaniel added.
The team has started scouting the course for Thursday’s Bridgeport Invite and planning a strategy for avoiding its hazards
“Learning how to approach holes differently is definitely one of the things that makes golf challenging,” McDaniel said.
Enders Lake Golf Course will host the Chase County Invite April 17.
With a short turn around, McDaniel said she’s grateful for the home course advantage.
“I’m thankful Enders Golf Course is allowing us to have a home meet so the golfers get to see how they do on a course that they feel more comfortable playing,” McDaniel added.
CCS results from last week’s meet are as follows:
