Chase County girls’ season ends in heartbreak game

The Chase County girls’ basketball team felt it was in the best position possible heading into subdistricts. The team had beaten each school in C1-11 and was hosting the event.
But the postseason can take funny turns. The Longhorns won its opening game against Cozad but was upset in the subdistrict championship game by Gothenburg last Thursday.
As Chase County Head Coach Randy Longoria said, “Things didn’t go our way.”
CCS spotted Gothenburg a nine point lead in the opening minutes of the Feb. 18 game. Alexis Richmond scored the Longhorns first five points of the game, then a bucket by Jerzee Milner closed the gap to four points, 7-11.
But the Swedes responded with an eight point run, broken by a three pointer by Jordan Jablonski with just under a minute left in the quarter.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter. Bryn McNair scored five points in 3:40 to leave the Longhorns trailing 15-20. Gothenburg scored four points before a free throw by Liz Reeves with 2:15 left was the last point scored in the half.
Coming out of the locker room trailing 16-24, CCS worked itself back into the game. Alexis Richmond made a three pointer and McNair a jumper to close the gap to 24-26. After two free throws by the Swedes, Jablonski scored five straight points to give CCS its first and last lead of the game, 29-28, with 2:52 left in the quarter.
“We had our chances with Jordan’s three from the corner, then Bryn blocking a shot on the other end,” Longoria said.
But CCS couldn’t take advantage. Gothenburg made a three pointer less than a minute later to regain the lead.
