CCS girls’ track team hitting on all cylinders

Records continue to fall for the Chase County girls’ track team.
Kamrie Dillan and Bryn McNair rewrote the school record books with last week’s performances at the Best of the Midwest at Sutherland and Dundy County-Stratton Twilight.
McNair’s 400 meter dash set a new meet record at the Best of the Midwest in Sutherland, besting the time set by McCook’s Molly Sughroue.
Her PR of 57.71 is also a new CCS record.
Dillan set a new 100 meter dash record Friday in Benkelman. Dillan’s 12.64 broke Adelaide Maxwell’s 2017 record of 12.7.
McNair also broke Mallie McNair’s meet record in the 400 at DCS.
The Best of the Midwest had its ups and downs.
Lucy Spady won the 3,200 meter run in a personal best and Jerzee Milner won the 100 meter hurdles.
With a pass in the last curve of the 800 meter run, Kora Weiss looked poised to take first place in the race. But the senior moved into the lane one ahead of Cozad’s Karyn Burkholder. When the pair moved into the homestretch, their feet got tangled up and both went down.
Burkholder won the race by 0.35. Despite the fall, Weiss still set a PR in the race.
CCS Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said Weiss ran a perfect race and called her a warrior for the way she battled.
CCS won the 1,600 and 3,200 meter relays, while coming in second in the 400 meter relay.
The Longhorns knocked 13 seconds off their season’s best time in the 1,600 meter relay and moved to the top of Class C in the event.
Hauxwell said the Longhorns went into the meet looking for good match ups and competition as a way to set PRs and build confidence heading into districts.
Athletes not taking part in the Best of the Midwest went to North Platte for its JV invite. The JV squad won the team title.
Three days later the full team dominated the DCS Twilight.
How coaches choose events for athletes at the Twilight can vary from year to year. Looking at this year’s state track schedule, Hauxwell said they didn’t hold back healthy athletes as a way to help them mentally prepare for Omaha.
After the high emotions of the Best of the Midwest, Hauxwell said it can be a challenge to repeat those performances.
Some athletes were able to duplicate that success.
K. Dillan’s school record won the 100 and Chloe Dillan’s PR led to a second place finish. The pair also went 1-2 in the 200 meter dash.
B. McNair and Ali McNair finished first and second in the 400, while B. McNair and Weiss were first and second in the 800 meter run.
Milner and Joee Clevenger took the top two spots in the 100 meter hurdles, including a PR by Milner who also won the 300 hurdles.
Spady won the 3,200 meters, Kaylie Lotspeich won the shot put, Liz Reeves won the triple jump, B. McNair won the high jump and A. McNair won the pole vault.
CCS also swept the relays.
To Sutherland for districts
CCS will return to Sutherland Thursday for the C-9 District track meet.
Besides the Longhorns, Bayard, Bridgeport, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Hershey, Kimball, Morrill, Perkins County and Sutherland will be at the meet.
The meet will begin at 10 a.m. MT with the first session of field events. The second session of field events will start at 11:30 a.m. MT, with running events to hopefully begin at 1 p.m. MT.
To qualify for state in individual running events, first and second place will advance, plus the next six fastest times in all districts.
The first place teams in each relay will qualify for state, then the next seven fastest times among all districts.
In field events, such as long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus, the top two will head to Omaha, with the next six best district performances going as well.
Qualifying standards are 9’10” in pole vault and 5’0” in high jump. For these events, the top two from each district qualify for state, plus anyone who clears the qualifying standards.
