Ryan Bernhardt gets ready to stiff arm an Irish defender during a first quarter run in his return to action against North Platte St. Pat’s Friday.

CCS falls to St. Pat’s on gridiron, Hershey up next

District leading North Platte St. Pat’s gave  the Chase County football team its fifth loss of the season Friday in Imperial.
St. Pat’s (5-1) got on the board first in the game, running the ball five-straight times. Its extra point was blocked.
The Longhorns capped its opening, eight-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Ryan Bernhardt. Chase County’s two-point conversion failed.
The Irish stuck with its running game on its second possession. Once more St. Pat’s found the end zone, scoring on third and goal from the one-yard line. The extra point kick was good.
St. Pat’s blew the game open in the second quarter. After scoring a touchdown early in the quarter, NPSP later caught Bernhardt in the end zone for a safety. After the Longhorns’ kick following the safety, NPSP scored on its first play and added the extra point. The Irish added a third second quarter touchdown to leave CCS trailing 6-36 at halftime.
The Irish tacked on to their lead in the third quarter with a touchdown and extra point.
CCS advanced into NPSP territory, but a snap over Bernhardt’s head was too much for the Longhorns’ offense to overcome.
Chase County added two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Dawson Mollendor broke free for a 15-yard touchdown late in the game.
CCS recovered the ensuing on-side kick, and Bernhardt quickly found Kade Anderson open for a 45-yard touchdown. Both extra point kicks were good to bring the final score to 20-43.
Bernhardt ran the ball 20 times for 133 yards. Gaswick said coaches only planned for Bernhardt to run five to seven times in the game.
“On pass plays when the pocket collapses on him and he has no open targets he chose to scramble and get what he could. I would have rather him chose to throw the ball away but that is not in Ryan’s nature,” Gaswick said.
CCS only had one penalty in the game. Gaswick said having higher expectations of athletes and communicating that penalties are costing CCS and limiting its overall success has helped keep turnovers low.

The Longhorns will travel to 0-6 Hershey Friday. The Panthers possess good skill position athletes but struggle with consistency, according to Gaswick.
“I believe we match up well with their size and scheme and should be able to limit their run game. We will have to be consistent with our reads and drops to help defend their spread attack in the air,” he added.
Gaswick said CCS will focus on improving the basics in the upcoming weeks, saying CCS has the ability to utilize multiple sets and fronts on offense and defense but needs to focus simply on blocking and tackling.
