CCS boys’ tracksters run away from competition at Cambridge

The Chase County boys’ track team overwhelmed the competition Saturday at Cambridge’s Don Stine Invite.
CCS won five events and placed in 15 of 17 events.
The Longhorns were able to have varsity and JV entries, which made Carl Zuege a happy coach.
“All of our athletes need competitive meets in order to see their growth and progress, and it had been two weeks since some of our younger kids had competed,” Zuege said.
“I was really pleased with their progress, especially in their overall effort and competitiveness,” Zuege added.
With the nice weather, Zuege said he wasn’t surprised to see nearly 30 personal records.
“We did not have a great week of weather for practice this week, so I was a little bit worried about that slowing our progress, but for the most part I thought we showed really good improvement over last week,” Zuege said.
Individually Cedric Maxwell won the 400 meter dash, Clay Meeske the 800 meter run and Brit Gockley the pole vault.
Chase County also won the 400 and 1,600 meter relays.
Overall, Zuege was very pleased with his team’s effort at Cambridge.
“It was nice to win the meet, and I thought that our team depth really showed. We benefited from quite a few 4th,5th, and 6th place finishes that allowed us to kind of pull away from the field,” Zuege said.
CCS will head to Sutherland Saturday for a much smaller meet with the Sailors, Brady and North Platte St. Pat’s.
Zuege said he was a little surprised by the 1 p.m. CT start time, but thinks the meet will move quickly.
“The Sutherland meet has generally been really competitive, and we should get a pretty good preview of what the SPVA meet might look like, minus Bridgeport and Kimball,” Zuege said.
He added, it will be a quick turnaround for CCS athletes to compete Saturday at Sutherland and then turn around and get ready for Chase County’s home invite on the following Tuesday.
“It will be a good challenge for us,” Zuege said.
