Bronco boys fall in subdistrict opener

The season ended Monday for the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team with a loss to Southwest.
The teams met in the play-in game for the D2-9 subdistrict in Wallace.
The Broncos trailed by as many as 11 points in the first quarter as two starters piled up three fouls each. Thanks to three 3s by Michael Duvel, WP was still in the game, 16-21, at the end of the first quarter.
Duvel continued his hot streak with a three pointer in the second quarter’s first minutes to pull WP to within two points, 19-21. Despite four points by Garrett Hanna and a three pointer from Jacksen Littrel, the Bronco deficit climbed to 28-41 at the end of the first half.
Grant Walker scored nine points in the third quarter as WP cut into the Southwest advantage. Hanna chipped in five points and the Broncos trailed 45-54 heading into the fourth quarter.
After Southwest scored the first points of the final stanza, the Broncos went on a run.
Allen Ramirez jump started the WP offense with a three pointer. Hanna added a field goal before Ramirez and Duvel nailed 3s to tie the game at 56. Duvel’s basket with 2:30 left in the game was the Broncos’ final points in the game. Southwest scored four points over the game’s final 2:11 to take the win, 60-56.
Duvel led WP with 15 points. Hanna added 14 points.

WP wrapped up its regular season at Mullen Feb. 19.
