CCS students to attend first speech tournament Saturday

Chase County Schools (CCS) students will be attending their first speech tournament at Perkins County High School on Saturday.
There are 10 students participating in competitive speech  with five attending this Saturday, said Alex Schilke, speech instructor/coach.
Some areas of competition the students will be presenting will be poetry with themes, extemporaneous news, entertainment speakers and serious prose, Schilke said.
There have been some schedule changes from what was previously released, she added.
The meet in Ogallala on Feb. 20 has been cancelled, said Schilke.
Other February scheduled competitions will begin with  Sutherland on Feb. 6, the Blue and Gold tournament in North Platte on Feb. 13 and a speech meet in Maxwell on Feb. 27.
In the past, the state speech competition in March has usually been held during spring break on the University of Nebraska-Kearney (UNK)  campus, Schilke said.
This year, the state contest will be held March 18-20 at Kearney High School, said Schilke.
“The SPVA Conference meet will be held in Sutherland in March, but the date is still pending,” she said.
