Visitors voice opinions about possible Avenue 343 closure

After hearing from a land owner in favor of closing Avenue 343 between 736 and 738 Roads in central Chase County, the Chase County commissioners heard from members of the public against closing the road at the July 13 commissioners’ meeting.
The county checked with  the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association for its opinion about the road being impassable after rain, but the visitors pointed out other minimum-maintenance county roads in poorer condition.
With so many concerned about closing the road, the board decided to leave it open and make repairs to the minimum-maintenance road.
Discussions continued about the road to Champion Lake. A road has been staked out along the north side of the Frenchman River to the lake. Other options were discussed, such as culverts or a low water crossing, but no action was taken.
USDA wildlife specialist Mike Sherman told the board he will be setting up lasers around the courthouse to try and keep the buzzards at bay.
Chase County Fair Board members Alex McNair, Scott Way and Ryan Stromberger gave an update on the preparations for this year’s fair.
Once fair is over, the fair board would like to repair and replace the electrical system that feeds the arena.
Way said work needs to be done to clean up the system and make it more stable. They have an estimate of $25,000 for the upgrade.
The next meeting of the commissioners will be Tuesday in the Chase County court house.
