Work begins this week on ‘junk yard’ road

Chase County Commissioners Jacci Brown, Dennis Kunnemann and Chuck Vette sat down Sept. 8 to tackle several pressing concerns.
The commissioners approved a five-day project to lay millings 1.2 miles at the end of the pavement south of Imperial on Avenue 331 (junk yard road).
Work began Monday and the road will be closed from the end of the pavement south.
There will still be access to the Southwest Nebraska Solid Waste Agency (SWA) Transfer Station.
There was discussion about holding on the $119,000 project due to harvest starting up soon. With worries about cooler weather this spring, the commissioners elected to start the project.
The county is purchasing millings from the State of Nebraska Department of Roads’ project at Champion. The millings will be mixed with oil and repacked.
Highway Superintendent Jeff Tidyman said it will be a great experiment for the county. If all goes well, Brown would like to see more of the county’s main roads improved the same way.
The board also discussed the upcoming project on Road 749 to Imperial Beef. There was discussion on putting the project off until the spring, but with bids expected to come in $250,000 higher, the commissioners agreed on do it this fall, starting in October.
