Republican earns eight press contest awards

The Imperial Republican earned eight awards in this year’s Nebraska Better Newspapers Contest. The awards were announced during the Nebraska Press Association’s annual convention in Lincoln this past weekend.
The Republican brought home one first place award, three second place awards and  four third place awards.
The Republican won first place for best editorial page, followed by a second place for editorials written by Managing Editor Jan Schultz and Co-Publisher Russ Pankonin.
Schultz’s editorial addressed the importance of a local newspaper to a community. Pankonin’s editorial addressed the lack of civility in the discourse of today’s society.
The page honoring local veterans earned second place for best signature page. The trio of Jana Pribbeno, Karen Hayes and Chris Fidler developed the page.
Pankonin’s story on the CCS Lady Longhorns repeat of a state track championship took second in the sports writing category.
Third place awards were earned for the Republican’s sponsorship and promotion of the community-wide garage sale. The campaign was developed by Pribbeno and Hayes.
The paper’s front page, sports pages and classified section received third place in the respective categories for best page.
The Republican competes against other Nebraska newpapers with circulation ranging from 1,500 to 2,500.
