Prior has ‘eye-opening’ experience at 4-H Congress

Lauren Prior of Imperial had the experience of a lifetime, she said, when she attended the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga. the end of November.
The conference emphasizes leadership, youth empowerment and cultural diversity that addresses the needs and issues of youth while helping to develop capable, competent and caring citizens.
She flew from Omaha to Atlanta where she joined 23 other Nebraska delegates at the Hyatt Regency. They were part of 950 combined U.S. delegates and approximately 250 chaperones attending the event at the Hyatt, she said.
Prior explained that she began this journey by putting together a record book of everything she was involved with in 4-H and outside of 4-H.
This record book, called a “Career Portfolio,” is divided into sections consisting of a bio, 4-H experiences, non-4-H experiences, pictures and a written story about her experiences and memories in the year leading up to submitting her portfolio last February, she continued.
Prior said she was notified in April that she had been selected to be a Nebraska delegate.
She said the National 4-H Congress event had daily workshops and general information sessions that usually included an interesting speaker.
Prior noted that she enjoyed listening to Sonny Perdue, who previously served as the 81st Governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011. He is currently the 31st U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
But she said she was particularly impressed with Dr. Eugen Schoenfeld, a retired professor of sociology.
Schoenfeld is a 92-year-old Holocaust survivor. Following his liberation from Auschwitz, Prior said, he explained that he went to work for the United Nations while working toward his PhD. He is also a writer and author of two books, she added.
“The professor was one of my most memorable experiences by far,” she said.
