Pea, wheat field day in Grant June 20

    Nebraska Extension staff members at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center at Grant will hold a field pea and wheat field day Tuesday, June 20.
    The day will begin with a field pea plot tour on the Steve Tucker farm beginning at 8 a.m. The site is located two miles west of Brandon on Hwy. 23, then  two miles north on Road 316.
    Extension Educator Strahinja Stepanovic said there are 16 varieties of peas growing in the test plot.
    Topics discussed at the site include pre-and post-emergent herbicides, planting dates and seeding rates.
    From there, the tour resumes at 10 a.m.  at the Wheat Center’s wheat plot which includes 49 varieties of wheat on trial.
    Characteristics and research about the various varieties will also be discussed.
    Following a 12 noon lunch at the center, discussion will continue indoors with field pea topics from 1-2:15 p.m.
    Stepanovic will address herbicide carryover in the field pea production cycle.
    A panel of pea farmers will discuss how to plant and harvest field peas.
    A specialist from Kansas will talk about the growth in field pea production in that state.
    From 2:15-3 p.m. a panel will discuss ways farmers can increase protein content in wheat.
    Panelists include Ben Sauder with Frenchman Valley Coop, Bob Cummings with Aurora Coop and Leigh Hoyt of the Kugler Company.
    Stepanovic asks that people pre-register as soon as possible so they can get an accurate count for the lunch. There is no cost to attend.
