Nebraska gas prices continue to drop

Monday was the 38th straight day the national average gas price has fallen and the first week of the national average being under $2/gal for the first time in over four years.

Early this week, local prices were $1.96 for unleaded. On Wednesday morning, the price dropped another 10 cents to $1.86 at stations in Imperial.

“As motorists park their cars and shelter in place, it is leading to an unprecedented drop never before seen in the U.S. gasoline demand—causing prices to sink like a rock,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Over the last three weeks, the average cost of gas per gallon has dropped 41.3 cents per gallon making the average cost of gas as of Monday $1.87 a gallon.

Gas prices in Nebraska are 55 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 78.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

Tim Long, petroleum manager for Frenchman Valley Coop (FVC), said gas sales at local fueling locations are staying steady with diesel sales slightly up.

“We have a lot of semi trucks coming through and fueling up at the T-Junction location,” Long said.

Long said they haven’t had any problems getting fuel delivered on a regular basis because FVC has its own truck fleet that loads fuel in North Platte.

“Some of the suppliers have suggested we keep fuel storage high in case of a shortage in the future,” he said.

Observing a dip in the markets, Long said he anticipates even lower prices this week.
