Natural Resources Committee holding hearings in McCook

Members of the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee, chaired by Sen. Dan Hughes of Venango, will hold a pair of hearings in McCook Thursday, Sept. 19.
The first hearing is part of an interim study to examine conditions under which the board of directors of the Nebraska Cooperative Republican Platte Enhancement Project and the Rock Creek augmentation project may dispose of real property each owns related to the projects.
Since the inception of the NCORPE project, Sen. Mike Groene has pushed to have the land above the augmentation project sold off while allowing the entity that owns the project to keep pumping augmentation water as needed.
Both NCORPE and the Upper Republican Natural Resources District, owner of the Rock Creek project, have expressed opposition to selling the associated property.
They fear a sale of the real property could risk their ability to operate the projects in the future for the benefit of irrigators.
The hearing will be held on the McCook Community College campus, McMillen Hall, Room 213 beginning at 9 am CT. The address for McMillen Hall is 1205 E. 3rd Street, McCook.
A hearing to allow people to address any concerns about Nebraska Game & Parks will follow at 11 a.m. CT in the same room.
