Lions Club flag project serving community

The Imperial Lions Club is a philanthropic organization that helps with many outreach projects in the community.
As the Fourth of July is celebrated this week, the club’s flag project is just one of those services.
Larry Radcliffe, long-time member of the Lions Club, is in charge of the flag project in Imperial. He has been coordinating this service since the early to mid 80s.
“I heard about the flag project as part of a community service elsewhere. It was a good program, so I decided to put it together for our community,” Radcliffe said.
Members of the Lions Club, along with other volunteers from the community, display the American flag on both sides of Broadway on holidays and every day of the Chase County Fair as a symbol of the town’s patriotism.
“We put the flags out at 6 a.m. and take them down at 5 p.m.” he said.
Radcliffe is grateful to all the volunteers who help put out flags.
“I am very thankful for the commitment from people to perform this service. I’ll take all the help I can get,” he added.
Anyone who would like to have a flag displayed can contact a Lions Club member and make their request.
“Currently, we put out 65 flags each time,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without the help of Merril Humphreys who always drives the pickup around to deliver the flags.”
The service fee for a flag display is $20 a year.
This is just one of a number of fundraisers that contributes money into a fund to be used for many service projects during the year.
The Imperial Lions Club has been providing services and donations to the community since 1931.
