Joe Arterburn, a 1975 graduate of Chase County High School, is a freelance writer, focusing on outdoor writing including hunting and fishing.
Arterburn, 59, of Sidney grew up in Imperial on the family farm near Lamar.
His journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln led him to newspapers in Alliance and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The contacts he made while covering outdoor sports led him to a career with Cabela’s.
He spent 23 years there, starting as a copywriter for Cabela’s catalog, moving up the ranks to Corporate Communications Manager.
After staffing reductions, he accepted a position as a “back page” columnist for Outdoor Life magazine, writing about the daily life of an outdoor guy.
While he still writes for Outdoor Life, Arterburn is more of a freelance writer now, also contributing to Petersen’s Hunting, Gun Digest and The Hunter’s Handbook.
Hunter’s Handbook is the official “how-to” of the International Hunter Education Association, that offers expert advice and training for “all things hunting.”
Arterburn recently found himself on a televised group hunt in South Africa.
“I’ve always been enamored with Africa since my early days,” Arterburn said in the series opener. “When this opportunity came, I just immediately said yes. I didn’t even ask when or any other details just yes I’ll go.”
