Forty-six students headed to state FFA convention

    It’s going to be a busy few days this week for Imperial FFA members and advisors.
    An entourage of 46 FFA members in grades 7-12, two advisors and a host of parents and other supporters will be in Lincoln for the state convention, which kicked off Wednesday and concludes Friday night.
    Imperial will have six students competing for top state honors who could move on to nationals for their proficiency applications. Those six are among the top three in the state for their proficiences.
    Eleven Imperial teams will compete in the FFA ag education contests, as well as a junior high quiz bowl team. There are also three FFA members in the speaking competitions.
    FFA State Degree recipients this year include Shaylee Heathers, Molly Luhrs, Dawn Castle and Trace Helser.
    Heathers’ Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is working at the Vet Clinic in Imperial, where she walked dogs, stocked shelves, helped with secretarial work and helped assist the veterinarians.
    Luhrs’ SAE involves working at Luhrs Certified Seed where she helps weigh trucks during harvest, cleans wheat seed, scoops grain bins and walks wheat fields.
    Castle’s SAE is working at Bomgaars in Imperial, where she was a sales clerk but also was involved in taking care of plants in the summer and stocking shelves.
    Helser’s SAE is detailing cars and helping around the shop at Harchelroad Motors. His second SAE is owning and raising, showing and selling show stock cattle.
    To be eligible for the FFA State Degree, members must have been in FFA two consecutive years and had to earn and invest a total of $3,000 from their SAE.
    They also must have 500 points earned throughout FFA activities, 150 of which had to be above the district level. Members who apply for their state degree must also have a minimum of 50 community service hours. Finally, each of the state degree applicants have to go through an interview process.
