First quarter sales tax betters last year’s

    Likely a reflection of an improving U.S. economy, the Imperial city sales tax receipts for the first quarter this year are up considerably compared to a year ago.
    The city took in more than $8,500 for the first quarter in 2018 compared to January, February and March 2017.
    Actually, the 2018 first quarter receipts bettered three of the four quarters in 2017. Only the 2017 fourth quarter, which includes the busy Christmas shopping season, had a higher quarter of city sales tax receipts.
    According to records from the Nebraska Department of Revenue, Imperial received $104,937.04 from January, February and March retail sales this year. The first quarter of 2017 tallied $96,206.78.
    The 2018 monthly breakdown is:
    January $38,200.05
    February 33,876.97
    March $32,860.02
    Imperial’s city sales tax receipts each month are split 50/50 between economic development and community development projects. That split is made after the sales tax from motor vehicle sales is first deducted and placed in the city’s street fund as required by state law.
    Imperial adds 1 percent sales tax on eligible purchases. Added to the state’s 5.5 percent, that equates to a 6.5 percent tax within the city limits.
