Workers from GBS Enterprises work on the roof of one of the new buildings at Nutrien Ag Solutions. The new fertilizer plant will be operational March 15, with the office space completed sometime in April.

Construction continues on Nutrien expansion

Construction crews are hard at work on upgrades at Nutrien Ag Solutions.
At a city council meeting in October, an approval essentially established a Nutrien Subdivision at the site of the business on East Hwy 6-61
Soon after, demolition and dirt work began by Cahoj Earthmoving, Inc. of Atwood, Kansas.
Last week, GBS Enterprises of Ulysses, Kansas and AGI Fertilizer Systems were working at the new Nutrien subdivision.
“We pretty much started over from scratch,” Imperial Facility Manager Slater Chandler said. “So everything’s pretty well going to be brand new all the way across.”
The main reason for the upgrades are efficiency and quality.
“Everything, crop production and fertilizer, will be fully automated,” Chandler said. “If someone wants 2,210 gallons of fertilizer or 212.5 gallons of a herbicide, that’s what he gets.”
Nutrien will be able to accomplish that promise by using state-certified mass flow.
“We won’t need to use scales so it cuts back on the time needed to get someone a product,” Chandler said.
Before, Nutrien was able to load semis in an hour.
“We can do it in 10 minutes now,” he added. “It doesn’t matter what it is; any blend of product.”
The new chemical warehouse will house a total of 6.8 million gallons of fertilizer.
“We can get everything down to your smallest micronutrients,” Chandler said. “We can also custom tailor to what a specific farm actually needs,” he added. “It’s extremely efficient.”
The fertilizer plant will be operational on March 15 and a new crop production warehouse will be operational shortly after.
The office should be completed sometime in April.
With the expansion of the facility, Nutrien has been able to employ more people, and still has positions open.
Between the old crop production warehouse and the new one, Nutrien will have an approximate 115,000 gallon bulk herbicide capacity in addition to two warehouses for packaging and shuttling products.
