Music in our schools: it’s a good thing

Concerts bring back fond memories.

I’ve always wanted to be a great singer, or an Olympic ice skater. Realizing the latter was totally out of the picture, music was my focus and always one of my favorite classes in high school where I strived to be that great singer. We didn’t have band at my high school, but I took vocal music all four years, eventually auditioning and making the coveted concert choir.
Tuesday’s SPVA junior high honor band and choir in Imperial brought back fond memories. The concerts featuring some of the best younger, musicians in our seven conference schools, were outstanding and showcased the area’s talent.
At some schools, music is often one of the first programs on the chopping block when budget dollars shrink. That hasn’t happened for the most part here, and that’s a good thing. Music is part of a well-rounded education and  professionals say it aids self-discipline and social development. While we can debate how many teachers a school should have and what specific classes should have priority, one thing is certain—music is a good thing in our schools.
