It’s important to remember

It’s still difficult to watch the reading of names.

I   get an uncomfortable feeling every year in September as Sept. 11 approaches. It happened again this year as we marked the 21st anniversary of those terrorist attacks on U.S. soil that left nearly 3,000 of our fellow citizens dead.
It’s hard to believe that most young people in college today can only watch the video or read about it. At least we hope they are reading about it in their post-secondary history classes.
That’s why it’s important to continue to observe the 9-11 anniversary with public displays and memorials, as so many communities do every year, usually on a beautiful day like it was that Sept. 11 more than two decades ago.
Congratulations to all the first responders and others in the county who did take time to remember that day with special displays or activities this past Sunday. I still find it hard to watch the live news coverage each year when those individual names are read, a lot of times by family members who continue to fight back tears so many years later.
With all the division in the United States today, it’s refreshing to see our elected representatives come together, at least in this effort, to remember the lives lost on 9-11. It’s kind of become  a separate memorial day of sorts—because of the horrendous nature of the attack on our own soil. In addition to the loss of our own citizens Sept. 11, 2001, the day also reminds us that we must continue to be vigilant of the foreign threats against this country instead of focusing so much time and money on so-called “domestic terrorism.”
