New voter ID law in effect for primary election

Beginning with the primary election on May 14, voters must now present a valid form of ID. Governor Pillen put this new law into effect on June 1st, 2023. This change was included on the 2022 General Election ballot and was passed by a majority of Nebraskans.
Valid forms of ID include a Nebraska driver’s license, a Nebraska State ID, a Nebraska college ID, a US Passport, a Military ID or a Tribal ID. A Nebraska political subdivision ID—state, county, city, or school—is considered valid, as well. Hospital, assisted-living facility, or nursing home records can also be used. One of these must be presented each time you vote. Those without a Nebraska driver’s license or state ID can get a free state ID card through the Nebraska DMV.
A Reasonable Impediment Certification (RIC) can be used if a valid form of ID cannot be secured because of disability, lack of required documents, or a religious objection to being photographed. In order to vote with an RIC, it can be included in a early voting ballot application or filled out when voting in-person early. An RIC can also be completed at a designated polling place on Election Day. If this is the case, the ballot will be considered provisional until the RIC is validated.
On Election Day, poll workers will be asking for your form of ID. It does not need to include an address and it can be expired. The worker will be looking for your name and photo. It is a good idea to secure your ID or RIC earlier rather than later so that the voting process goes smoothly.
