Rough start for Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team

    The Wauneta/Palisade volleyball team kicked off with a busy first week.
    On Thursday, Aug. 24, Hitchcock Co. started off the season at home. In a very close first set, Hitchcock Co. pulled out a 25-22 win.
    The Broncos bounced right back winning sets two and three with scores of 25-20 and 25-18.
    The momentum shifted when Hitchcock Co. was able to squeak out a 25-23 win in the fourth set. In the fifth set the Broncos fell 11-15 giving them the first loss of the year.
    Coach West attributed the loss to the first game jitters and Hitchcock Co. playing a very good game. She credited the Broncos for never giving up.
    Saturday, Aug. 26, the lady Broncos traveled to the Cambridge tournament with the Norton, Kansas Bluejays being their first opponent. All matches would consist of best of 3 sets.
    In a see saw battle Norton took the first set 25-19 but the Broncos bounced back to win the second set 25-20. It was all Norton in the third set taking a 25-12 win and handing the Broncos their second loss of the year.
    Next up where the Southwest Roughriders of Bartley. Southwest came into the game undefeated.
    The Broncos got off to a slow start losing the first set 10-25. The second set was much closer, but the Roughriders were to much for the Broncos, winning the second set 25-18 and taking Wauneta/Palisade to an 0-3 start to the year.
    In the final match the Broncos faced Rawlins County. In the first set the Broncos never trailed and picked up the win.
    Rawlins Co. came out fired up in the second set and built a 10-8 lead before the Broncos went on a 13 point scoring streak. That was to much for Rawlins Co. and the lady Broncos got their first win of the year.
    Next up the Broncos will Host South Platte in Wauneta on Friday, Sept. 1 starting at 3 p.m. MT. South Platte comes into the night with a record of 0-1 after losing their first match to Southwest.
