CCS Speech team ninth at competitive PCS meet

Chase County’s Speech team finished ninth out of 23 teams at Saturday’s Perkins County Speech Meet.
The meet included a wide variety of schools.
Head Coach Alex Schilke said, with the size of this meet and the class size of some of the teams, she was extremely pleased with how the Chase County speakers competed.
The Class A/B team championship went to Ogallala with Gering in second.
Perkins County was the Class C1/C2 champion followed by Hershey.
Maywood/Hayes Center and Dundy County Stratton went 1-2, respectively, in Class D1/D2.
CCS placed four performances in the top 10 of their category.
“It was so exciting getting four events into finals, and many of the other speakers were close to getting in as well,” Schilke said.
Andrew Wiest led the way with a first place finish in serious.
“Andrew Wiest’s first place in Serious was so exciting for our team. The support they give each other helps each student strive to do their very best,” Schilke said.
The OID team of George Colton, Kevin Dannatt, Zach Herbert and Wiest was fourth.
Colton placed ninth in entertainment and Paige Nickless was 10th in humorous.
While CCS was missing several team members due to illnesses, it also had performances by Herbert and Dannatt in informative, Wiest in humorous and Emily Randall and Katelyn Stamm in poetry, plus a duet by Chloe Colton and Andee Schoenholz.
Schilke said CCS’s speakers have been working hard to learn scripts, develop characterization, and publish their pieces, so it is so rewarding when they have success at competitions.
Schilke went on to say she’s hopeful CCS will have a full lineup at this week’s Sutherland meet.
“With these additions and another week of practice for everyone, I believe we will be even more competitive in our upcoming invites,” Schilke said.
