Alfayo WP medalist at RPAC Art Contest

Wauneta-Palisade’s Sophia Alfayo was the school’s medal winner at January’s RPAC Art Contest.
As WP’s medalist, Alfayo’s “Femme Fatale” is an acrylic assemblage that advanced on to the Best of Show judging.
WP Art instructor Danny Schluckebier said Alfayo is a very talented artist who understands what concepts and ideas work in creating artwork.
“She is not afraid to experiment with techniques and different materials to see what they can do for her,” Schluckebier said.
Best of show went to Hitchcock County’s Bailey Hidy’s “Ascension” acrylic painting of a dragon.
WP’S first honorable mention went to Ashton Wheeler for “Music.”
“Ashton is very talented and likes creating artwork with his computer as well as his hands. He can be technical with his techniques and ideas and knows his ability to make good looking art,” Schluckebier said.
He said Wheeler has a great grasp on color theory and knows how to combine the art elements to make interesting work that draws attention to the detail.
Alfayo also was WP’s second honorable mention for “Intuition,” an abstract piece.
“Typically younger students don’t dabble in abstract work because, frankly, it’s hard to grasp and difficult to pull off correctly or in a pleasing way. Sophia can. She will continue to be creative and not let anything slow her down learning and making great artwork,” he said.
Mandy Sandoval was third honorable mention for “We’re all Connected.”
Schluckebier said Sandoval is very talented and knows the art principles and elements well.
“She easily combines styles and concepts to create interesting and unique art. Mandy isn’t afraid to learn new techniques and applies them well in her work,” Schluckebier said.
