Young people escape injury in train collision

Two Imperial teenagers escaped injury Tuesday when the vehicle they were in collided with a slow-moving train southeast of Imperial.
Trevor Peterson, 16, was driving a 2002 Chevy Suburban and was accompanied by Brooklyn Christensen, 17.
They had traveled to Peterson’s home during the noon lunch break at school to pick up some things.
As they were returning to Imperial, northbound on Rd 336, they didn’t see an NKC Railnet train entering the crossing.
The northbound view of an approaching train is obstructed by some trees and Sheriff Kevin Mueller said Peterson did not see the train before entering the crossing.
The engine struck the vehicle broadside on the passenger side. The vehicle was pushed off the tracks about 20-30 feet, coming to rest on the south side of the tracks.
    The train proceeded into Imperial.
Mueller said they interviewed the engineer of the train.
