Laurence (Larry) Snell - August 14, 2014


Laurence (Larry) Kennard Snell, 75, of York, Neb., lost his battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at his home while surrounded by family. He was the youngest of 11 children born to George W. and Gertrude C. (Bensen) Snell on Dec. 5, 1938, in Omaha.
Larry graduated from Kearney State College in 1960 after running cross country and track for four years. He received the 1959/60 Omaha World-Herald State College Athlete of the Year award and was inducted into the UNK Hall of Fame for Athletics in October 1993.
Larry was a teacher and a coach for 14 years before starting a 27-year career in the insurance sales and service industry. He retired in 2003 from Nationwide Insurance Company and worked another eight years in security at the NPPD Operations Center in York. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York.
Larry married Gaylene K. Olson on Nov. 7, 1959 in Kearney, Neb. He received great joy from his bride of 54 years and many blessings from their seven children, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife Gaylene of York, children Kevin Snell of Gretna, Neb., Debora and husband Dwight Hansen of York, Neb., Kimberly and husband David Blaser of Malcolm, Neb., Denise and husband Tim Brown of Lincoln, Neb., Kerry L. Snell of Waverly, Neb., Darcy and husband Gary Arnold of Lincoln and Kurt Snell of York; grandchildren Alexis, Seth and Zach Snell of Gretna, Derek and wife Carrie Hansen of Grand Island, Neb., Brock Hansen, Caleb Hansen and Kirsten Snell, all of York, Jordan Hansen of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Christina and husband Josh Rausch of Seward, Neb., Jesse and Nick Blaser of Malcolm, Tyler and Kyle Brown, Grayson and Macy Arnold, all of Lincoln, and Ashton Snell of North Charleston, S.C.; great-grandchildren Joslyn and Nora Hansen of Grand Island; sister, Thelma Hauschild of Papillion, Neb.
Larry is also survived by a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Adam Hansen, six brothers and three sisters.
Larry was extremely grateful to his Lord for his life, and living in a land of freedom to choose as his Lord allows.
Funeral services were held on Aug. 8, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with Pastor Mike Neidow officiating. Interment followed at York’s Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial was established to his family for a later designation.
