Gustav Bartels - November 26, 2008


Gustav Henry Bartels, the seventh of nine children born to Carl Bartels and his wife, Doris (Fortkamp) Bartels, was born June 15, 1915, at the family home south of Enders, Neb.
He was made God’s own child through Holy Baptism on June 20, 1915, at the family home. He made public profession of his faith on March 24, 1929, at his confirmation at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Gus attended St. Paul’s parochial school through eighth grade. As a young man he was active in the Walther League and played in the church band.
He was united in marriage to Margie Hansen on June 8, 1947, at St. Paul’s. God blessed this marriage with three children, Kathleen, Glenda and Stuart.
He served in the U.S. Army for 44 months during WWII. He farmed with his wife northwest of Stratton for 13 years before moving to the present farm south of Wauneta.
He sang in the church choir most of his adult life and held several offices at St. Paul’s. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Wauneta Co-op Oil Company.
Gus was actively involved in the family farming operation until the day before his death.
He was called by his Savior on Nov. 26, 2008, after 93 years of God’s grace.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arnold, Otto, Reinhold, Alfred, Walter and Reuben; and sister, Frieda Crosson.
Gus leaves to rejoice in his salvation his wife, Margie; two daughters, Kathleen Wicke and husband, Lloyd of Littleton, Colo. and Glenda of Denver, Colo; one son, Stuart and wife, Kathleen, of Wauneta; five grandchildren, Kristine Orton, Garrett Wicke, Jon Wicke, Joe Bartels and Chris Bartels; great-grandchildren, Timothy Orton and Teryn Orton; sister, Elsie Becker of Wauneta; three sisters-in-law, Ida Bartels of Wauneta, Wilma Bartels of Enders and Velma Case of Benkelman; special niece, Bonnie Majors and husband, Don, of Wauneta; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Wauneta with Pastor Keith Wellman officiating.
Interment was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Wauneta.
Organist was Mrs. Deb Nordhausen with musical selections by St. Paul’s Lutheran choir.
Military Rites were presented by Wauneta American Legion Post #304 and Wauneta VFW Post #7996.
Casketbearers were Joe Bartels, Jon Wicke, Elmer Case, Jim Long, Chris Bartels, Bob Bartels, Wayne Bartels and Dick Bartels.
Honorary Casketbearers were Garrett Wicke, Teryn Orton, Kristine Orton and Timothy Orton.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
