Edward Havel - March 13, 2014

Edward Leroy Havel was born March 3, 1939, in rural Rawlins County, Kan., to Ralph and Ruth (Taylor) Havel. He attended school near Atwood and assisted on the family farm. Ed was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1959 and served until 1961.
Ed married Karol Jean Miller on July 21, 1962, in Atwood, Kan., where the couple settled. Ed and Karol resided in Hayes Center, Neb., before moving to Imperial where Ed worked for Sam Unzicker for 22 years.
Ed was a member of VFW Post #4688 of Imperial and the American Legion Post of Hayes Center, Neb. He enjoyed crossword books, riding horses, taking care of cattle and he especially loved family time.
Edward passed away Tuesday evening, March 4, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb. He was 75 years of age.
Survivors include wife Karol of Imperial; daughters, Kathy Sramek and husband Rob of Max, Neb., Brenda Hopkins of North Platte, Neb., Julie Willis of McCook, Neb.; son Brian Havel and wife Jennifer of Benkelman, Neb.; nine grandchildren, Austin, Mandy and Mirya Sramek, Amber and Dakota Havel, Tyler Willis, Shawn Michael, Wesley and Aaron Hopkins; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Sramek, Emily Sramek, twins Trynden and Tenlee Havel; sisters, Beverly Whitnington and husband Marvin of Atwood, Kan., Janis Carson and husband Gary of Duncan, Neb.
Funeral Services were held March 8, at the Benkelman Community Building, Benkelman, Neb. with Pastor Phil Harris officiating.
Casketbearers were Shawn Michael Hopkins, Aaron Hopkins, Tyler Willis, Brandon Linden, Wesley Hopkins and Johnny Miller.
Interment followed at the Benkelman Cemetery.
Military Rites by American Legion Post #65 and VFW Post #417, Benkelman.
A memorial has been established in Ed’s memory.
