Roger Stumpf - April 09, 2009
Roger Stumpf was born on Oct. 4, 1943 at Imperial, Neb. He was the oldest of six children born to Henry and Darlene Carey Stumpf.
Roger grew up on the family farm north of Madrid until fire destroyed the home when he was in the fifth grade. The family then moved to their farm home north of Grant, Neb.
Roger attended Perkins County High School in Grant, graduating in 1962.
When Roger was a sophomore, he started a dance band with his friends, and they were known as the Rondehls. Music was a true enjoyment for Roger and he played in different bands at various times for his entire life.
Roger was married to Linda Walsh in Ogallala, Neb., on July 2, 1966. He joined the Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Roger and Linda made their home in Grant where they raised their two children, Michele and Shane.
He began his own body repair and paint business in 1981, working out of his own garage. He later bought the Art Pump building on the south edge of Grant and worked out of this shop until he retired in 2006 due to his health.
He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in April 2006 and fought a good fight until he was transferred to the Perkins County Community Hospital early Wednesday morning, April 1, 2009 where he died. He had reached the age of 65.
One of Roger’s passions was his 1955 red Chevy pickup that he built to replica. He won several awards for showmanship in area vehicle shows.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda; one daughter, Michele, and her husband, Alan Poppe, of Grant; one son, Shane, and wife, Andrea Stumpf, of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren that he had a special relationship with, Brooke, Blake and Alex Poppe; Carter and Hannah Stumpf; two sisters, Jeanie, and husband, Eldon Cornelius, of North Platte, Neb., and Jody Tavis of Kearney, Neb.; three brothers, Marvin of Grant; Jon and wife, Amanda, of Boerne, Texas and Tracy of Chadron; other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 6, 2009 at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Grant with Rev. Mark Pfeiffer officiating.
Music was by Connie Cohen and Lori McCloskey.
Casketbearers were Galen Tickle, Lou Kraus, Dean Lagler, Jim Styskal, Pat Vlasin, Doug Sexson, Brett Bullock and Dave Kedrowski.
Interment was in the Grant Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
