Jerry Nelson - May 26, 2011


Jerry Nelson, 64 years of age, from Axtell, Neb. passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. 
Jerry was born on May 7, 1947, in Kearney, Neb. to Leverne and Virginia (Juhl) Nelson. 
He grew up in the Axtell area and graduated from the Axtell Community School in 1965.
On Sept. 4, 1966 he married Bonnie Beahm in Minden and they lived and farmed near Axtell. 
Jerry was an active member of the Bethany Lutheran Church south of Axtell and was currently serving as church council president.  Jerry really enjoyed the music of the church. 
He was a past member and board member of the Axtell Lions Club, past board member of the Axtell CO-OP, and past member of the Corvette Club.  He was a member of the Axtell Chamber of Commerce, the Axtell Rural Fire Board, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. 
Jerry enjoyed being around his friends and family. He especially loved being with his three granddaughters. He looked forward to meeting friends for coffee.
Jerry also served as one of Santa’s helpers for both young and old a like for many years.
Everyone will miss Jerry’s wonderful smile and his orneriness.  
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Axtell; two daughters, Amy Jo Nelson of Grand Island and Jodie Schuller and her husband, Cory, from Imperial, Neb.; one son, Jeff Nelson, and his wife, Kelly, of Axtell; three granddaughters, Claire and Audrey Nelson and Madison Schuller; two brothers, Jim Nelson and his wife, Dora, of WaKeeney, Kan. and Don Nelson, and his wife, Mary, of Hildreth; sister, Jane Robinson of Kearney and mother in-law, Mary Beahm of Minden. 
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Nelson; and sister, Joyce Vahle.
His funeral will be Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church south of Axtell with Rev. David Evenson officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden on Friday from 3-5 and 7-8 p.m. 
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
