Joyce E. Newman - January 06, 2011
Joyce Elaine Newman, 72 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.
She was born Feb. 27, 1938 on the family farm in Chase County, west of Champion, Neb., the youngest of three children of Charles Alvin and Clara Frances (Upchurch) Davison.
Joyce received her primary education from a rural school near Champion and then graduated from Chase County High School at Imperial with the class of 1956.
Following her education, Joyce was employed by Adams Drug Store in Imperial.
In 1959, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Dwayne C. Newman at Chanute, Ill. and to this union four sons were born: Dan, Dean, Darren and Delwin.
The family made their home in Imperial until 1965 when they moved to Holdrege. While in Holdrege, Joyce focused on raising her sons when they were young. She was then employed by Wheeler’s for a few years and then began to work at Jack and Jill Grocery Store which later became Sun Mart Grocery until her retirement after 25 years of service.
After retirement, Joyce enjoyed being involved in her son, Delwin’s projects, especially being a spectator to his racing.
She had a special place in her heart for animals and all of her special friends and family would remember her love for Garfield, of which she collected several items.
She enjoyed bowling and playing cards and loved the friendship bonds formed through the years in bowling league and card club.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; son, Darren Jay Newman; and brother-in-law, Howard Bernard.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Dwayne of Holdrege; three sons: Dan Newman and his wife, Kristi of Axtell, Neb., Dean Newman of Holdrege, Neb. and Delwin Newman and his wife, Lisa of Salina, Kan.; four granddaughters: Tailer Rogers of Grand Island, Neb., Darienne Newman and Shelby Newman, both of Axtell, Neb. and Zayn Newman of Quincy, Ill.; one brother, Stanley Davison and his wife, Betty of Garden City, Mo.; one sister, Farris Bernard of Imperial, Neb.; sister-in-law, Jerry Phelps of Lisco, Neb.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Joyce E. Newman were conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Neb. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at 10 a.m. with Reverend Dale Lambert, officiating.
Interment was held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Imperial, Neb. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at 1 p.m. MT (2 p.m. CT).
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
