Elizabeth (Betty) Gruber - December 03, 2009

Elizabeth Ruby (Betty) Gruber was born Sept. 13, 1921, at Manhattan, Kan., to William M. and Gertrude (Symmonds) McLeod.
As a young girl she attended school in Manhattan, graduating from Manhattan High School in 1939. Betty then continued her education at Kansas State University graduating in 1943 with a degree in Education.
Betty married Robert Allen Gruber on May 26, 1946, in Manhattan and to this union two daughters were born, Trudy and Janice.
The couple’s 49 years together included many moves to different cities and states. Betty taught school in several of those locations including White City, Gypsum and Concordia, Kan. In 1991, the couple retired in Imperial, Neb., to be near family.
Betty passed away Saturday evening, Nov. 28, 2009, at the Chase County Community Hospital, Imperial. She was 88 years of age.
Betty was a very active person in all the communities that she lived including ours. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, UMW Deborah Circle, PEO, Hospital Auxiliary, Senior Women’s Golf League and the United Methodist choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1995; a sister, Laurel Percival and an infant sister.
Survivors include daughters, Trudy Hutchinson and husband, Cliff, of Emporia, Kan., Janice Owens and husband, Kenny, of Imperial; four grandchildren, Karen Hutchinson of Kansas City, Mo., Kelly Owens and husband, Terrance Goodlow, of San Antonio, Texas, John Owens of Iowa City, Iowa, Melissa Owens of Maryville, Mo.; sister, Idee Buell of Hutchinson, Kan.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Imperial with Pastor Kay Alnor officiating.
Private family inurnment will occur at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Betty’s memory.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
